For the pastry
  • 1 lb kataifi pastry
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup walnuts or pistachios, chopped
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
For the syrup
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup honey
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Method

Preparation & Baking
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix the chopped nuts with cinnamon and set aside.
  3. Take the shredded kataifi pastry and separate it gently.
  4. Drizzle the melted butter over the pastry and mix until it’s well coated.
  5. In a greased baking dish, layer some of the pastry on the bottom, then add a layer of the nut mixture.
  6. Top with more kataifi, repeating the layers until all ingredients are used.
  7. Bake for 30-40 minutes or until golden brown.
Making the Syrup
  1. Meanwhile, prepare the syrup by boiling water, sugar, honey, and vanilla extract in a saucepan for about 10 minutes.
Final Steps
  1. Once the kataifi is done baking, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the syrup over the hot pastry.
  2. Let it cool before serving.

Notes

Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or garnish with powdered sugar and fresh fruit for added flavor. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. You can also prepare the layers a day in advance, just remember to add the syrup right after baking.
