Ingredients

Main ingredients
  • 2 pieces green peppers (sliced) Fresh peppers enhance flavor and texture
  • 1 piece onion (sliced) Use a medium onion
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced; or 1 tbsp garlic powder) Use fresh minced garlic for best flavor
  • 2 - 2.5 lbs thinly sliced steak (top round recommended) Slice steak thinly for tender bites
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 envelope dry Italian dressing mix
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cube beef bouillon
  • 6 slices provolone cheese Substitute with other meltable cheeses if desired
  • 6 pieces hoagie rolls Consider whole grain or gluten-free options

Method

Preparation
  1. Place all ingredients in the Instant Pot or Slow Cooker, except for the cheese and hoagie rolls.
Cooking
  1. For the Instant Pot: Use the pressure cooker setting, seal, and cook for 20 minutes.
  2. For the Slow Cooker: Cook for 4-8 hours on low.
  3. If using the Instant Pot, let it naturally depressurize for 10 minutes before releasing the steam and opening the pot.
Assembly
  1. Scoop out the meat and veggies into the hoagie rolls.
  2. Place the hoagie rolls on a cookie sheet, topping each with a slice of cheese cut in half.
  3. Broil for about 5 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Notes

Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days or frozen for longer storage. Reheat in the oven for best results. For a vegan option, substitute steak with seitan or mushrooms.
