Ingredients

For the cake
  • 1.75 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.75 cups unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk at room temperature
  • 0.5 cups vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
For the frosting
  • 1 cup Nutella
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 0.25 cups heavy cream to reach desired consistency

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Beat on medium speed for about 2 minutes.
  4. Stir in the boiling water until well combined. Don’t panic; the batter will be thin!
  5. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans.
  6. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove to a wire rack to cool completely.
Frosting
  1. Beat the softened butter and Nutella in a bowl until creamy.
  2. Gradually add powdered sugar and beat until smooth.
  3. Add heavy cream to reach your desired consistency.
  4. Once the cakes are cool, spread the Nutella frosting between the layers and on top of the cake.
  5. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

For a fluffier cake, ensure your eggs and milk are at room temperature. Sifting cocoa powder helps avoid clumps.
