- In a skillet over medium heat, caramelize sliced onions until golden brown. Remove and set aside.
- In the same skillet, increase the heat to high. Shape the ground beef into loose balls and smash them down in the pan to create a crust. Season with salt and pepper. Cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side.
- Add jalapeño slices on top of the beef and place a slice of cheese on each patty to melt.
- Toast the burger buns in the skillet.
- Assemble the burgers by placing the beef patty on the bun and topping with caramelized onions and any additional desired toppings.
Notes
Don’t skimp on caramelization! The longer you let the onions cook, the sweeter and richer the flavor. Use fresh jalapeños for a nice crunch. For spicier burgers, add more jalapeños or hot sauce.
