Preparation
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until fully combined.
- Cut your donuts in half horizontally. If they’re slightly stale, it’ll actually work in your favor for better texture.
- Dip each donut half into the egg mixture, making sure it’s thoroughly coated but not soggy. Let it soak for about 10-20 seconds on each side.
Cooking
- In a large skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter over medium heat until bubbly.
- Place the soaked donut halves in the skillet, cut side down, and cook for about 3-4 minutes until they are golden and crispy.
- Flip them over, adding more butter as needed, and cook for another 3-4 minutes until caramelized.
Making Caramel Drizzle
- In a saucepan, melt the remaining butter and sugar until bubbly. Carefully stir in the heavy cream, watching for bubbling.
- Sprinkle in flaky sea salt to taste, creating a rich, sweet drizzle.
Serving
- Drizzle the caramel over the crispy donut French toast and serve warm.
Notes
Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days in an airtight container. Reheat in the oven or toaster. Freshness counts—slightly stale donuts are better for soaking.
