Ingredients
  

For the crust
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (cold, cubed) Chill the butter for best texture.
For the filling
  • 4 cups peeled and sliced apples (such as Granny Smith) You can substitute with other tart apples.
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice Helps prevent apples from browning.
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar Adjust the sweetness based on apple variety.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, granulated sugar, and salt.
  3. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Press half of the mixture into the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
Filling
  1. In another bowl, combine the apple slices, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, brown sugar, and vanilla.
  2. Spread this apple mixture over the crust.
  3. Sprinkle the remaining flour mixture over the apple layer.
Baking
  1. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until the top is golden brown.
  2. Let it cool before cutting into bars and serving.

Notes

Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
